Announcements
  • Grant Park Ambassadors is a go! We have received unanimous support from every level of GPNA, from NPU-W, from Zoo Atlanta and Grant Park Conservancy board of directors. Major Finley, Zone 3, has expressed support. Commissioner Harnell Cohen of the Department of Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs has also expressed initial support. We will meet with DPRCA management on March 23rd to seek final approval. We’ve raised $8K towards our $15K goal ($4K each from Zoo Atlanta and Grant Park Conservancy). Our debut will be Saturday, April 4th – just 5 weeks from now! Thanks to everyone for your support. Keep it coming!
  • Easter Seals will host a fundraiser walk Saturday, April 18th 9-11:30 a.m. One street lane will be closed all way around Park. Please plan accordingly and advise your neighbors.
  • Atlanta Jazz Festival is confirmed for Memorial Day weekend, May 23-24, in Grant Park. The main stage will be near the Berne Street entrance. This is a Class B Festival. The event could draw between 20,000 – 50,000 attendees. A group of local organizations is already coordinating with the City on issues such as transportation and public safety that affect the neighborhood. This is a perfect opportunity for Grant Park Ambassadors!

Business
  • Motion to request GPNA donate $4K to Grant Park Ambassadors pilot program (matching other partners’ grants) was properly made, seconded and passed unanimously.
  • Motion to approve neighborhood volunteers locking gate to Grant Park Rec Center parking lot at closing each night was properly made, seconded and passed unanimously. Question arose about what time gate would be unlocked because FitWit (boot camp) uses the parking lot early some mornings. Phred answered gates would be unlocked at opening, 6 a.m., and suggested perhaps FitWit staff could also sign out a key so they could unlock gates early mornings they use parking lot.
  • Motion to obtain combination key safe to store Grant Park Rec Center gate key was properly made, seconded and passed unanimously. The type of key safe would be the same as the one on the gate to the park at Berne St./Park Ave. Phred will check with Park District Maintenance Supervisor to obtain this type of security.
  • Motion to endorse Park Pride’s 2009 Plan was properly made, seconded and passed unanimously.
  • Alan Forde discussed possibility of closing park gate earlier than 11 p.m., at sunset each evening. Phred commented that City Council member Carla Smith was generally supportive of such a measure, but that it would require legislation to change park closing times. Phred agreed to discuss this with DPRCA Commissioner Harnell Cohen.
  • Everyone brainstormed strategies and tactics regarding Grant Park Ambassadors. Notes from this session will be posted separately.
