Cherokee Sidwalk base slab pour - March 2006

Note the half-width driveway apron form, the curved allowance to protect tree roots, and the curb reveal height of 6 inches from street grade.
Work continues at a fast pace this week on the sidewalk repair on the Woodward to Bryan block of Cherokee Avenue. This photo shows several key components of the transportation committee's engagement with the City project manager, contractor, and subcontractor. Because of our engagement, the sidwalk will reuse the original brick pavers, yet will last longer because of a poured slab underneath them.

This project is going quite smoothly.

The subcontractor is doing three good things in this photo.
1) the sidewalk curves in to accomodate old tree roots, rather than raise the sidewalk bed over them, or worse, shaving the roots.
2) He poured a half-width concrete driveway apron so that the visual field of the brick walking surface will be uninterrupted for pedestrians, and
3) They have straightened and adjusted (and preserved) most of the period granite curbstones with a 6-inch reveal to effectively channel stormwater from the street intp the street gutter where it belongs, rather than over the sidewalk.
